Rukka AIRMAN Motorcycle Jacket and Pants
Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants with detachable mid layers are designed for hot, warm and moderate weather conditions. The temperature range in question is one of the largest and the versatile AIRMAN suit adapts easily to changing requirements by following a common outdoor apparel principle of wearing multiple layers. By adding or removing the mid layer, the AIRMAN becomes a very different suit and with additional mid and base layers the range expands even further. The mesh like shell structure is made of CORDURA® fibers, allowing constant air flow through the structure on a large surface area. Zipper vents are no longer needed and the shell material is ideal for riding in humid and hot conditions. There are no external chest pockets, nor a back protector to hinder the air flow around the upper body. The detachable mid layer of the Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants has a waterproof Gore-Tex® membrane and a thermal Outlast lining against the rain and the chilly winds, but also to regulate the temperature inside the garment.
The shell fabric of the Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants is knitted CORDURA® fibre, also called air flow technology AFT fabric which allows constant and even more efficient ventilation through the shell compared to the regular CORDURA® 500D. This is the highest ventilation level offered by the RUKKA and more extreme alternatives could be found from the KLIM, TOURATECH and the offroad MX world. Below the waist line there are expansion panels behind the zipper, but there is no need for air vents due to the CORDURA® AFT. The factory offers 2 tones of gray and a full black AIRMAN jacket. The lightest gray reduces the direct sun light effect the most and delivers the best possible cooling effect from the colors point of view. Although the AIRMAN pants are available only in full black. An elegant and slim layout with the few tones of gray fits to a large spectrum of motorcyclists also outside the allroad category and therefore the Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants are probably a very popular choice.
When the temperature drops below the 20 degrees or 68F, the Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants offer plenty of protection against the elements. The detachable Gore-Tex® and Outlast mid layer is effective against the chilly winds and the rain. The mid layer concept basically works very well, but the other side of the coin is that putting on the liner pants on the road somewhere when the rain suddenly hits, is quite impractical and requires proactivity from the motorcyclist. On the other hand the Outlast lining is a perfect solution to regulate the changes of temperature which makes it more comfortable to wear well before the drop. Naturally the AIRMAN jacket can be connected with the pants in order to form a suit and reduce some of the air flow around the waist. The collar of the Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket is surfaced with soft neoprene which works well with the helmet lining without sticking and pulling when turning the head.
Rukka AIRMAN Motorcycle Jacket & Pants Features
The wide woven CORDURA® AFT shell of the Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants is highly breathable, abrasion and tear resistant which makes it ideal for dual sport. The air flows literally through the fabric and ventilates the garment from inside non stop and therefore the AIRMAN suit requires no separate air vents what so ever. The simple layout of the AIRMAN without external chest pockets maximizes the air flow around the hottest areas. The jacket comes without a back protector which would of course reduce some of the cooling effect. Without the liner the Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle shell jacket and pants are not able to offer enough protection against the elements at the opposite end. The zippers and pockets are neither waterproof and sensitive items in the pocket require waterproof bags. The AIRMAN shell jacket has 5 external and 2 internal pockets. The external left side front pocket comes with a waterproof pouch. External pockets and the collar are zipper plus magnet closed which is very functional in dusty allroad conditions. The magnet closure is a little bit more user friendly than the snap fasteners and a lot better than the VELCRO® closure.
The Rukka AIRMAN jacket and pants come with a full Gore-Tex® & Outlast liner which can be removed from the shell suit when riding at high temperatures. This wind and waterproof mid layer becomes necessary in the rain and moderate weather conditions. The liner has extra long sleeves with extension cuffs which are easier to placed on top of the gloves. The jacket liner can be zipper connected with the AIRMAN pants, forming a complete rain suit. The Outlast lining is ideal for changing temperatures, thank to the ability to store the excess heat and regulate the temperature inside the garment by controlling the moisture. As soon as the conditions change, the Outlast lining automatically releases the stored heat and moisture for the rider`s benefit. This means also that the rider is able to put on the AIRMAN liner pants well before the temperature drops and remain comfortable until it`s time to put the jacket liner on too. A sudden change of pants can be sometimes troublesome unlike the top and the Outlast liner helps right there. The AIRMAN liner jacket has 2 internal pockets which are naturally waterproof.
The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants have proper volume adjustments on the waist line and the sleeves. The volume adjustments allow to fine tune the garment according to the number of base and mid layers in question and keep the armor inserts in the right places at all times. In addition to the waist belt, the AIRMAN has extension panels on both sides behind the zippers. These extension panels are useful when crouching or the lower pockets have items pulling the hem outward a little bit. Arms have upper and lower adjustments with 3 stage snap fasteners. Cuffs have VELCRO® adjustments and zipper closures which is in fact the best combination. The zipper closure is the quickest way to create more room when putting the jacket on or placing the cloves with long cuffs below the sleeves. The neoprene collar has also a magnetic fastener on the flap which makes sure that the collar is not sticking to the helmet lining or the balaclava when turning the head. The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket has no storm collar and the fixed collar is not designed for very extreme conditions. I would recommend to carry on board a Gore-Tex® laminated balaclava or neck warmer to cover the most extreme conditions. The AIRMAN jacket has also the Rukka signature crotch belt which makes sure that the jacket would not be pushed up when getting up on the saddle.
The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket has altogether 9 pockets from which 3 are waterproof. 4 external and 4 internal at the front plus one big utility pocket at the rear. This is basically quite enough and simply better from the ventilation and protection point of view. Having too much items in the pockets serves no purpose, but since the AIRMAN is designed for hot weather riding, having a back pack would also reduce the amount of air flow. Therefore the amount of items in the pockets should be always optimized and partly placed in the luggage. The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle pants have 2 front pockets, but no thigh pockets which makes this suit perhaps a tiny bit urban too.
The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket and pants have both D30 Air molecular armor inserts for the limbs, but there is no back protector as a STD feature. Although the jacket has the armor insert pocket in place for a D30 Air Central Back Protector which has plenty of ventilation holes and fulfills the CE requirements. I would not dear nor recommend to ride without at least a full set of street level protectors which would be anyhow rather modest compared to the highest level of body armors. Even though any armor would reduce some of the ventilation and form a rather solid layer close to the skin, the safety comes always first and proper base layers such as the Rukka MAX technical shirt & bottom help a lot by removing the excess heat from the skin. Naturally the Rukka D30 Air protectors can be easily removed from the insert pockets for a machine wash. The key Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle jacket features are:

Rukka AIRMAN Motorcycle Pants
The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle pants are made of the same CORDURA® AFT as the jacket and the pants have also detachable Gore-Tex® and Outlast liner against the elements. The liner is zipper connected from the top and strapped with buttons from the cuffs. On the high wear areas, there are double GORDURA® AFT layers as reinforcements. The front pockets and the zippers are not waterproof, but the front pockets are hardly useful as a storage anyway. Typical for RUKKA, the AIRMAN pants have no front gator behind the flap, but in this case it would have not been any detail from the waterproof point of view. Behind and above the knees there are stretch panels which allow the pants to adapt in different riding positions without a typical pull or tension of a trim fit. The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle pants are supported with the waist line adjustments on both sides and detachable suspenders which would allow further air flow in the waist area when the adjustments are left more loose. Those who prefer to ride without or would like to machine wash the pants, could quick remove the suspenders by opening the VELCRO® fasteners.
The Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle pants are designed to fit with several RUKKA jackets and the pants are therefore available in black only. That is very understandable compromise, but reduces a little bit the cooling effect in the direct sun light. Thanks to the CORDURA® AFT shell, this is not a problem, but generally all purpose pants are often less ideal for the most demanding conditions. The AIRMAN pants have comfort oriented RUKKA Air Cushion layer to minimize the pressure of the edges and forms on the rider seat against the skin which is a very welcome feature for touring purposes and improves the blood flow in the high pressure areas. The AIRMAN pants have in the seat area a special glide preventing contact patch called RUKKA Antiglide which helps eliminating unintentional sliding on the seat. This may sound irrelevant, but it`s a useful feature. The hip and knee impact protection is created with the same RUKKA D30 Air limb protectors as used with the jacket. The armor inserts can be easily removed from the pockets for a machine wash. The key features of Rukka AIRMAN motorcycle pants are:
